They bought Spears Funeral Home from Thomas & Deborah Cook in 2017. The Cook family owned and operated the funeral home for 15 years and Tom has been an employee at Spears Funeral Home since 1984.
Prior to the Cook’s purchase of the funeral home in 2002, it was owned and operated by the Spears family. William “Billy” Spears Jr. ran the funeral home from 1979 until 2002; his grandfather, George Spears and father, William Spears Sr. founded the Spears Funeral Home in 1955.
Before Spears Funeral Home opened, George Spears worked for Gibson’s Funeral Home. When the Gibson family decided to sell their business, George purchased the inventory and Spears Funeral Home was born. Gibson’s Funeral Home was founded in 1892.
The longest running funeral provider in Franklin County, Spears Funeral Home, is now under the ownership of it’s 4th different family. The relationships started by the Gibson’s in the late 1800’s have been passed on through the past century by the Spears, Cook and Goss families. A key part to the success of Spears Funeral Home is the smooth transition of leadership; each owner has started out as an employee. Relationships built and maintained over the years have been a significant contributor in the success of Spears Funeral Home.
